SwitcH2 B.V., a Rotterdam-based offshore renewable energy projects firm, is pleased to announce that its Project Atlantico, a 300 MW green ammonia project offshore Portugal, has been awarded with the recognition of a Project of National Interest (PIN) by the Portuguese Government. SwitcH2 develops this flagship project via its wholly-owned subsidiary, Power Atlantico, to whom the PIN status has been granted as per a decision of the Permanent Commission for Investor Support (CPAI), coordinated by AICEP – the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency.
This award recognizes the project’s strategic importance for Portugal’s energy transition plans, for the national economy and for European climate objectives.
Project Atlantico will involve the deployment of a floating production unit off the northern coast of Portugal, in the Viana do Castelo region, designed to produce 790 tons per day of RFNBO compliant ammonia from seawater. Powered by wind and solar energy, the project will bypass port infrastructure constraints and enable the large-scale deployment of renewable fuels for industrial use and maritime propulsion within the EU.
The project has also been awarded the STEP Seal by CINEA of the European Commission, further highlighting its relevance to EU clean energy and innovation goals and was sponsored via a grant scheme of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (Topsector Energiesubsidie), administered via Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO).
“Achieving PIN status is a major milestone for Project Atlantico and SwitcH2,” said Saskia Kunst, CEO SwitcH2. “It recognizes the strategic value of offshore RFNBO ammonia production in supporting Portugal’s and the EU’s energy and climate ambitions while providing industrial-scale clean fuels at competitive costs.”
Bob Rietveldt, Power Atlantico’s local director adds “By adopting existing ammonia production know-how and proven offshore production technologies, Project Atlantico offers a scalable, safe, and bankable solution that will accelerate the rollout of RFNBO fuels globally”.
Project Atlantico works with world-class technology partners including Ohmium, ThyssenKrupp Uhde, ABB, Veolia and Linde, and collaborates locally with energy partners. The project represents a strategic investment in Portugal’s energy and maritime sector and reinforces SwitcH2’s mission to deliver carbon-free ammonia solutions at scale.
